EduSweep

We know the sort of unwanted files that can find their way onto a network. MP3s, music videos, all manner of scripts and exploits and 3rd party software are just some of the things that can turn up in user areas from time-to-time. You probably have software restrictions in place and an antivirus product but none of these will effectively detect or remove all these unwanted filetypes. That's where EduSweep comes in.

One way to remove unwanted files is to use the built-in Windows search with wildcards. For example, you could search for "*.bat" to find all batch files. Unfortunately, Windows search isn't designed for this task - it's only possible to search for one filetype at once, the search can be slow and there's no way to save the results.

EduSweep's approach is different. Its scan engine uses regular expressions to check files against multiple queries at once. This approach is very fast and EduSweep is capable of over 2500 files a second. With its built-in definition lists, you can easily scan for scripts, executable files and media in a matter of minutes.

There's even a keyword scanner, so files like "steve's proxy list.txt" will be detected, even if their file extension isn't dangerous.

The built-in results viewer shows you detailed scan results, letting you take actions such as:

  • Deleting detected files or moving them to quarantine
  • Getting more information from sites such as FILExt and Google
  • Opening the containing folder to check for other suspicious files
  • Scanning the file for viruses using online services
  • Viewing the file contents safely

The logging module saves each scan as a log that you can review later or use as evidence if needed.
